Job Title: Museum Curator

Location: HEH The Nizam’s Museum, Hyderabad, India

Reports To: Honorary Secretary of The Nizams Museum

Job Type: Full-Time

Salary: ₹35,000 - ₹40,000 per month


Job Summary:

The Museum Curator at HEH The Nizam’s Museum is responsible for overseeing the preservation, documentation, exhibition, and promotion of the museum's collection. This role requires a deep understanding of the museum’s cultural significance, along with expertise in curation, conservation, and public engagement. The Curator will work closely with the Director, the Administrative Officer, and other museum staff to ensure the museum’s collections are well-maintained and accessible to the public. The role also includes organizing exhibitions, educational programs, and fundraising activities to enhance the museum’s outreach and financial sustainability.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Collection Management and Conservation

  • Conduct daily inventory checks of the museum's artifacts, ensuring their security and proper documentation.
  • Oversee the conservation, restoration, and maintenance of museum articles, furniture, and the overall museum environment.
  • Improve labeling, lighting, and display arrangements to enhance the aesthetic presentation of the collections.
  • Organize the cleaning and conservation of artifacts, seeking external expertise when necessary.
  • Supervise the digitization of the museum's collection to ensure long-term preservation and accessibility.

2. Exhibition and Display

  • Develop and implement thematic exhibitions by rearranging and displaying artifacts to attract and engage visitors.
  • Work on the creation of museum guides, brochures, and coffee table books to complement exhibitions.
  • Enhance the visitor experience through innovative display techniques and interactive exhibits.

3. Educational and Promotional Activities

  • Collaborate with local educational institutions to promote the museum’s educational potential and organize student visits.
  • Assist in organizing memorial lectures, seminars, workshops, and competitions to engage the community and increase awareness of the museum's offerings.
  • Liaise with media and educational institutions to generate publicity and promote the museum through various channels, including print, digital, and social media.
  • Draft and edit content for museum flyers, websites, and press releases, ensuring consistent and accurate communication.

4. Research and Documentation

  • Maintain accurate records and databases related to the museum’s collection and its historical context.
  • Plan and oversee the publication of museum journals, books, and articles related to the Asaf Jahi Dynasty and HEH Mir Osman Ali Khan.
  • Supervise documentation and cataloging efforts, ensuring all records are up-to-date and in accordance with museology standards.
  • Support staff in providing factual information during guided tours and educational programs.

5. Fundraising and Development

  • Work alongside the Administrative Officer to identify and establish contacts with government and private organizations for fundraising initiatives.
  • Develop proposals and strategies for fundraising events, sponsorships, and partnerships to secure financial support for museum operations and projects.
  • Participate in grant writing and submission to support museum activities and improvements.

6. Administrative and Supervisory Duties

  • Supervise the museum staff, including the security team, ensuring the smooth operation of daily activities.
  • Oversee the maintenance of the museum building, garden, and facilities, ensuring a clean and welcoming environment for visitors.
  • Manage the museum’s financial activities, including budgeting, accounting, and the supervision of ticketing and billing processes.
  • Prepare and present reports, agendas, and service rules for museum staff, contributing to the museum’s overall administration and governance.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Post-Graduate degree in Museology, History, Art History, or a related field.
    • Diploma in Oriental Languages (Arabic/Persian) or P.G. Diploma in Museology.
    • Special courses in Conservation are highly desirable.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a curatorial or similar role within a museum, gallery, or cultural institution.
    • Proven experience in organizing exhibitions, seminars, and educational activities.
    • Experience in conservation and restoration of artifacts, with a focus on historical collections.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of museology norms and practices.
    • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency in languages, particularly Urdu and Persian, is highly preferred.
    • Ability to use museum management software and digital tools for cataloging and inventory management.

Additional Information:

  • The Curator will be expected to actively participate in museum board meetings and contribute to strategic discussions regarding the museum’s future.
  • This position requires a commitment to upholding the museum’s mission of preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Asaf Jahi Dynasty and the Nizams of Hyderabad.
